# Small museums, archives and collections to research in Mayotte

A useful research journey through Mayotte starts with a question about an object, a practice or a document. Dzaoudzi's museum collections, Bandrélé's salt-making heritage and the departmental archives offer different kinds of evidence. A painting has an artist and a collection history; a working implement belongs to a sequence of gestures; an archival reference identifies material that may have travelled far from the village where it originated. Following those distinctions produces a more revealing itinerary than collecting museum names.

It also requires separating collection research from physical access. Cyclone Chido struck on 14 December 2024, and heritage recovery continued into the following year. Archivistes sans frontières documented work in several communes in November 2025. These dated interventions cannot establish conditions in October 2026. The places below are research leads, with available access information identified separately; none should be treated as a confirmed walk-in appointment. [S01]

## Dzaoudzi and the MuMA collections

The MuMA is Mayotte's departmental museum, associated with the former barracks at Dzaoudzi on Petite-Terre. Its official departmental description connects natural history and archaeology with everyday life: the *duka*, or village shop, women's domestic space, jewellery and technical knowledge have all informed its exhibitions and collecting. This breadth makes the museum relevant to questions about ordinary objects as well as exceptional specimens. [S02] The Ministry of Culture's record M1209 confirms its Musée de France designation from 20 December 2018. That designation identifies an institution, not an opening timetable. [S03]

Two named artworks give researchers more precise starting points. Mucem's English exhibition announcement identifies Didier Valhère's *La Mahoraise*, a 2005 pastel, as belonging to the Musée de Mayotte. Its 2026 programme separately identifies his *La rencontre des mondes*, a 2025 acrylic on canvas measuring 300 by 180 centimetres, in the same collection. Recording the title, medium and date avoids merging two works by the same artist. Neither publication supplies an accession number, which would be a useful next request to the museum. [S04; S05]

The programme also describes archaeological ceramics, worked rock-crystal fragments, jewellery and *bao*, wooden writing tablets used in Quranic education. These are leads into the relationship between materials, learning and movement across the Indian Ocean. Its exhibition, *Mayotte Maoré La rencontre des mondes*, is scheduled at Mucem in Marseille from 18 November 2026 to 17 October 2027. On this article's checking date, it remains a future exhibition, not evidence that particular objects are already on display in Marseille or available in Dzaoudzi. [S05]

Access needs particular care. The departmental museum page records a safety-related building access ban following the 2019 earthquakes, while describing continuing research and activity outside the building. [S02] Bouclier bleu France's January 2025 intervention notice subsequently describes structural damage and threats to ethnographic collections after Chido. [S06] Ask the museum which collection documentation can be shared, whether a specific object is available for study and whether any current public programme offers an appropriate introduction. A catalogue reference is useful even when the object cannot be visited.

## Bandrélé and the evidence of salt making

![White salt in an open woven basket resting on a patterned woven mat.](assets/FIC-CG1-F0070_PHOTO02.jpg)

*Salt from Bandrélé in a woven basket, photographed on 20 October 2013. The image illustrates the material product, not a particular festival, a museum accession or current sales availability. Unmodified.*

Bandrélé's Écomusée du sel presents a different relationship between a museum and its subject. The national intangible-heritage inventory identifies the *mama shingo* association as its manager. Salt is made by collecting salt-bearing sediment, filtering brine and heating it over wood fires. The inventory's record, numbered 2025_67717_INV_PCI_FRANCE_00548, was submitted on 20 December 2024 and included in the national inventory in 2025. Its photographs and earlier fieldwork should not be mistaken for a post-cyclone condition survey. [S07]

The inventory describes a perforated metal filtering vessel called a *kiliho*, supported on a wooden bench, and differentiates practices among women and communities. Some detailed techniques remain within families. For a researcher, the useful question is therefore how a particular tool is used, repaired or replaced, rather than whether it represents one fixed, island-wide tradition. Permission to watch a public demonstration should never be treated as permission to record every exchange or publish a practitioner's knowledge. [S07]

A government account of the site's European-funded development describes an indoor permanent exhibition linked to outdoor interpretation along the production area. This establishes a documented interpretive arrangement, not a present-day inventory of surviving panels or equipment. [S08] If access is possible, compare the explanation on a panel with the sequence demonstrated by a practitioner. Note whether an implement is in working use, displayed as an older example or reproduced for teaching. Those distinctions make photographs and field notes much more useful later.

Published visiting information remains conditional. CCSud lists Monday-to-Saturday hours beginning at 8 am, with seasonal closing times. [S09] Mayotte Tourisme's listing includes a 2026 opening period but expressly warns that the day's hours are not guaranteed; it publishes 0639 04 86 82 as the contact number. [S10] Confirm the visit, demonstration arrangements and any charge directly. Neither a calendar entry nor national heritage recognition proves unrestricted access to the production space.

## Mzouasia as a lead for domestic material culture

CCSud also identifies an Écomusée de l'artisanat et de la mariée at Mzouasia, in the commune of Bouéni. Its accompanying photographs include miniature nuptial beds. That is a concrete lead for investigating how domestic furnishings and marriage customs are represented through models. The page does not provide an item-level catalogue, ownership history or current research-access procedure. [S09]

Approach this as a collection to investigate, rather than a fully documented museum stop. Ask who made a model, when it entered the display and whether its form reproduces a particular bed or demonstrates a general design. Request the name used locally for the object, with the speaker's preferred spelling. A model can be evidence about teaching or commemoration without being a surviving furnishing from the period it depicts. No verified post-Chido opening arrangement for this site was established in this desk check.

## The departmental archives as a research hub

The Archives départementales can connect these local enquiries to named records. Its 2020 guide provides particularly useful references: **1 E 3/13** includes a 1925 Tsingoni succession document; **1 E 4** identifies records of Bandrélé's cadi, then a Muslim judicial officer, dated 1916–1979; **2 AV**, *Les vieux, mémoire d'un pays*, covers oral recordings from 1996–2002; and **29 Fi** contains photographs relating to Cyclone Kamisy in April 1984. These are the guide's descriptions, not confirmations of current availability. [S11]

Choose a reference according to the question. A succession record and a model of household furniture do not describe the same thing, but comparing their purposes may reveal what each leaves out. Likewise, a recorded recollection and a photograph have different dates of creation and different relationships to the event remembered. Ask for the relevant finding aid before assuming that a series contains material on a particular family, craft or village.

The guide's published rules require an identity document for a reader card, describe free attendance without appointment subject to capacity, and limit requests to ten archival units per half-day. Consultation is in the reading room, subject to access restrictions. Reproduction requires staff approval and is undertaken by the service; audiovisual and image reproduction involves specific agreements. These are **2020 rules**, not verified 2026 operating instructions. [S11]

There is evidence against relying on those old walk-in arrangements. Le Journal de Mayotte reported the reading room closed until further notice on 16 October 2025 because of Chido damage. This is a dated press report, not a current departmental reopening notice. [S12] The official Service Public directory supplies **archives.mayotte@cg976.fr** and **+262 269 66 16 09**. Ask for the current consultation location, available formats, applicable rules and an explicit appointment confirmation before travelling. [S13]

## Chirongui and records still being recovered

Local records may remain with their producing commune. In its diary for 28 November 2025, Archivistes sans frontières reports preserving 31 linear metres of Chirongui's permanent archives, including material dried sheet by sheet. It also records finding children's drawings of mangroves from Poroani's primary school. This is an unusually specific reminder that municipal collections can contain representations of place made by children alongside administrative records. [S14]

The diary establishes a recovery operation, not a public exhibition or a consultation entitlement. It provides no catalogue numbers for the drawings. A useful enquiry would ask the commune whether they have been identified, catalogued and made consultable, with the departmental archives as a possible source of guidance. Do not turn a rescue team's description of storage premises into visitor directions.

## Preparing a useful enquiry

Send a short request naming the object or archival reference, your question and the intended use of any reproduction. Separate a wish to view material from a request to photograph, quote, translate or publish it. For oral testimony, ask about the recording date, language, available transcript and conditions attached to reuse.

Keep a simple research log recording the repository, reference, source date and what remains unconfirmed. Mayotte's collections can support work across villages without requiring every village to possess a conventional museum. The strongest result may be an identified document or an agreed conversation with a custodian, rather than an additional stop on a visitor map.

## Locate the communities

Google Maps community searches: [Dzaoudzi](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Dzaoudzi%2C%20Mayotte), [Bandrélé](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Bandr%C3%A9l%C3%A9%2C%20Mayotte), [Mzouasia](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Mzouasia%2C%20Bou%C3%A9ni%2C%20Mayotte), [Chirongui](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Chirongui%2C%20Mayotte). These are orientation links, not verified property addresses, building entrances, boarding points or event venues. Check the named commune and village in the source record; confirm current access and the complete journey separately. A search result is not an access invitation or proof of a service or event.

## Research gaps before publication

- Reconfirm the MuMA's public programme, premises access and arrangements for object research; the opened primary material does not establish a reopening after the earlier restrictions and Chido.
- Obtain current departmental-archive consultation instructions and a post-closure status confirmation. The full 2020 guide was accessible; its consultation rules are historical and do not establish current arrangements.
- Confirm Bandrélé's demonstration and admission arrangements and Mzouasia's operating status, collection contact and object ownership. Published listings alone do not settle these points.
- Obtain the MuMA accession references for the two Valhère works and any inventory references for the Mzouasia models or Poroani drawings before asserting item-level catalogue identities.
- The departmental museum page links to a virtual museum, but the opened application yielded no inspectable collection text. No object descriptions or digital-access promises were taken from that application.
- Independent Qwen and DeepSeek reviews have not been submitted. Final editorial QA and publication clearance remain incomplete; this source is not live.
