# Reading small-town bus and rail information for Mayotte

## From Nyambadao to the barge at Mamoudzou

Can an ordinary passenger travel from Nyambadao to Mamoudzou's ferry connection without confusing a school bus with public transport? The published answer is yes: M’safara's M3 timetable includes **Nyambadao Village** and **Mamoudzou Barge** on the same route. Its network map identifies the onward B1 maritime connection to **Dzaoudzi Quai Issoufali**. This is a documented bus-and-barge journey, not a rail itinerary. The remaining work is to verify departures, boarding arrangements and the return for the intended day. [M3 timetable](https://www.msafara.yt/assets/media/FHD_Msafara_M3_3.pdf); [network pocket guide](https://www.msafara.yt/assets/media/Msafara_PlanPoche.pdf).

That distinction matters in Mayotte, where information from different stages of transport development remains online. A feasibility study, an operational launch notice and a timetable do different jobs. This guide uses sources checked on **27 October 2026**. Its timetable examples explain how to read a published document; they are not confirmations that a particular bus will run on a future date.

## Establish which service you are reading

M’safara is more than a proposed network. The Département-Région's announcement of 31 May 2026 records its official launch on 29 May, a week after operations began. It describes a journey with passengers on M3 from Mamoudzou to Chirongui. That is stronger evidence for an operating public route than an old infrastructure plan. It is also post-Chido evidence, rather than an assumption that a pre-cyclone service has recovered unchanged. [Departmental launch announcement](https://www.mayotte.fr/actualite/msafara-le-reseau-interurbain-du-departement-region-officiellement-lance).

Transdev's network profile, modified on 29 July 2026, identifies M’safara as the department's interurban brand and Transdev Mayotte as its operational coordinator. Its responsibilities include passenger information and bus-and-barge ticketing, working with the route operators. For this journey, the network's passenger service is therefore the appropriate place to clarify a connection or ticket condition. A municipal office can help identify a place, but should not be treated as the source of the operator's daily departure information. [Transdev network profile](https://www.transdev.com/reseau/reseaux-urbains/msafara).

## Name the village rather than only the commune

*Nyambadao beach, in Bandrélé commune, on 4 June 2017. This photograph identifies the village’s coastal setting; it does not locate the M3 stop or describe a route from the beach.* Photo: Frédéric Ducarme; [CC BY-SA 4.0](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/); [original file and attribution](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Plage_de_Nyambadao.jpg). Original photograph, unchanged.

Bandrélé's municipal presentation lists six villages, including Nyambadao and Bandrélé itself. Thus, “Bandrélé” can describe the wider commune or the village bearing that name. Giving only the commune name when asking for a bus risks identifying the wrong starting point. The municipality's page establishes this geography; it does not establish today's location of a bus-stop pole. [Municipal presentation of Bandrélé](https://bandrele.yt/decouvrir/presentation-de-la-commune-de-bandrele/).

Use the complete stop label when preparing the journey. For the example here, write down Nyambadao Village, M3 and Mamoudzou Barge together. Add the address or landmark where you are actually staying. Ask which boarding point serves the required direction and how to reach it from that address. A stop name containing “Village” does not mean a bus collects passengers from every street.

This is especially useful when someone gives directions verbally. Repeat the village and destination rather than relying on “the bus towards town”. Keep the exact published label on your phone or on paper, even if a local contact uses a shorter name. The object is to reconcile the two descriptions, not to assume that one must be wrong.

## Read one direction and one day at a time

The linked M3 sheet is marked **05/2026**. It runs between Mamoudzou Barge and the Chirongui interchange, with separate direction pages. Each page separates Monday-to-Friday services from Saturday services. For the outward journey, use the page headed towards Mamoudzou Barge; do not use the time at the route's starting terminus as the boarding time at Nyambadao. [M3 timetable](https://www.msafara.yt/assets/media/FHD_Msafara_M3_3.pdf).

For a concrete reading exercise, the Saturday grid on page 2 pairs **07:48 at Nyambadao Village with 08:30 at Mamoudzou Barge** in one column. Page 1's Saturday return grid pairs **16:05 from Mamoudzou Barge with 16:51 at Nyambadao Village**. These are examples printed in the May sheet, not an independently confirmed October itinerary. Read down the same column; sliding sideways accidentally combines different buses. [M3 timetable](https://www.msafara.yt/assets/media/FHD_Msafara_M3_3.pdf).

Save both direction pages, including their headings. Do not crop away the service-day label. If travelling on a Sunday or public holiday, obtain an explicit answer for that date rather than borrowing the Saturday pattern. Likewise, a journey planner's general day-selection button does not by itself prove that your chosen route operates on that day. [Network journey-planning page](https://www.msafara.yt/se-deplacer/fiches-horaires).

## Treat the ferry as a second departure

![A vehicle ferry alongside the Mamoudzou quay with passengers near the boarding ramp.](assets/FIC-CG1-F0071_PHOTO02.jpg)

*A ferry loading at Mamoudzou on 15 September 2013. Original photograph, unchanged.

The network guide distinguishes **B1 to Dzaoudzi Quai Issoufali** from **B2 to Dzaoudzi Quai Ballou**. The two names should not be collapsed into a single vague destination called “Dzaoudzi”. For the example journey, ask specifically about the B1 departure and the pedestrian boarding arrangements at Mamoudzou. A shared interchange on a map is evidence of a connection point, not a promise that a vessel waits for a late bus. [Network pocket guide](https://www.msafara.yt/assets/media/Msafara_PlanPoche.pdf).

The department's maritime overview confirms the role of the inter-island service in carrying passengers and vehicles between Grande-Terre and Petite-Terre. It separately describes Dembéni–Mamoudzou and Longoni–Mamoudzou shuttles as projects in preparation. That page cannot be used to substitute a supposedly operating coastal ferry for the M3 road leg. [Departmental maritime overview](https://www.mayotte.fr/amenagement/transports-et-mobilite/transport-maritime).

If you have an appointment on Petite-Terre, work backwards from the appointment to the destination quay, the crossing and the bus. Add time for getting from the bus stop to the boarding area and for any queue. No verified minimum transfer time was established in this check, so a precise connection margin would be invented. Obtain practical advice for the particular sailing, especially if the appointment cannot be moved.

## Understand the ticket before boarding

At the checking date, the network's ticket page advertised a **€2 single ticket valid for three hours with up to two connections**, under its Bus + Barge heading. It also listed a €7 day ticket. These are the prices displayed by the network, not a guarantee against subsequent changes. The single is described as a one-way journey: do not interpret its three-hour validity as permission for an unrestricted return trip. [M’safara ticket information](https://www.msafara.yt/titres-abonnements/tickets-msafara).

Ask how the ticket covers your specific bus-and-ferry sequence, where to obtain it before boarding and how to validate it at the transfer. The May pocket guide says there is no sale aboard vehicles. Meanwhile, the online FAQ describes internet purchase as available once online ticketing becomes functional. Those statements make it unwise to arrive assuming that either the driver or a website button will solve the purchase at the last minute. [Network pocket guide](https://www.msafara.yt/assets/media/Msafara_PlanPoche.pdf); [network FAQ](https://www.msafara.yt/infos-pratiques).

The network instructs passengers to validate their title on boarding and to retain it. Keep the ticket accessible throughout the journey, including after leaving the bus. Avoid calculating a full trip budget from a ferry-only price found in an older visitor directory: the combined product and a standalone crossing are different purchases. [M’safara ticket information](https://www.msafara.yt/titres-abonnements/tickets-msafara).

## Do not substitute school transport or a rail proposal

The halO’ website identifies its network as the department's school transport service, serving pupils and students under specific arrangements. Its presence in a village does not establish a general-public alternative to M3. Check the brand and service scope before using a search result headed with a school, college or lycée. The operator name alone is insufficient because Transdev is involved in both networks. [halO’ service description](https://www.halo.yt/qui-sommes-nous/).

Rail search results need the same discipline. The department's **5 May 2021** article on Tréni bilé describes a conference and preliminary feasibility work. It does not supply a passenger timetable or announce trains entering service. Nothing in that document supports adding a railway station or a train connection to this journey. Read its project language literally rather than converting an aspiration into a travel option. [Departmental Tréni bilé article](https://www.mayotte.fr/actualite/treni-bile-un-projet-de-reseau-ferre-a-mayotte-sur-les-rails).

## Close the return journey before setting out

For a final check, contact M’safara with the date, route, stop and direction. Its passenger-information page lists **02 69 66 63 65** and **contact.msafara@transdev.com**. Ask whether the published sheet still applies, whether either boarding point has moved and which return connection is realistic. Check the traffic-information timestamp as well as the status message. An absence of posted disruption is not a reservation or proof of a particular vehicle's arrival. [Passenger information and contact](https://www.msafara.yt/infos-pratiques).

If you require step-free boarding or assistance, ask about the bus, both quays and the path between them. The website's accessibility page discusses digital access; it does not certify this entire physical journey as accessible. [M’safara accessibility page](https://www.msafara.yt/accessibilite).

The useful outcome is a short, complete travel note: the correct village stop, M3's direction, the ferry's destination quay, ticket arrangements and a confirmed way home. That is more dependable than collecting every transport name on a map, and more useful than assuming Mayotte follows a mainland bus-and-rail pattern.

## Locate the communities

Google Maps community searches: [Nyambadao](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Nyambadao%2C%20Bandr%C3%A9l%C3%A9%2C%20Mayotte), [Mamoudzou](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Mamoudzou%2C%20Mayotte). These are orientation links, not verified property addresses, building entrances, boarding points or event venues. Check the named commune and village in the source record; confirm current access and the complete journey separately. A search result is not an access invitation or proof of a service or event.

## Source register

All sources below were opened and their relevant content checked on **27 October 2026**. The municipal presentation and Tréni bilé article were retrieved directly as public HTML after the web reader failed; their text was inspected locally. Both M3 PDF pages and the pocket guide's network-map page were rendered and visually inspected. No operator was contacted and no journey was observed.

## Verification limits

This is an English source draft, not live travel advice. The named M3 stop pair and B1 connection are documented in official network materials, with an independent departmental operational-launch notice. Exact travel-day departures, current stop positions, walking/transfer times, accessibility, holiday operation, ticket sales availability and disruption handling remain unconfirmed. No current rail service is asserted. Independent Qwen and DeepSeek reviews have not been submitted; final QA is not complete and publication is not live.
