Village fairs, weekly markets and civic calendars across Corsica
A Friday market can move without changing its weekday. In Corte, the first Friday of the month points to Place Porette; the others point to Place Padoue. Venaco's cheese fair uses a different rhythm, bringing production skills and celebration together over several days. Piana's municipal pages preserve something different again: records of civic and cultural work, some much older than their page heading suggests.
These three places offer a way to read a local calendar without imagining that every notice is an invitation to an upcoming event.
Corte's weekly market: the square matters as much as the weekday
Corte's municipal notice dated 5 June 2026 sets the weekly market at Place Porette on the first Friday of each month and at Place Padoue on the other Fridays. Corte's dated market-location notice
A note that says only “Friday market, Place Padoue” would miss that distinction. It also shows why a recurring weekday is not enough: there can be a rule within the month. Before visiting, check the relevant Friday and any later municipal changes. The notice does not establish the presence of a particular trader or product.
The notice locates a market, not a guaranteed set of traders. Questions about how a cheese or vegetable was produced belong with the seller; the town's name cannot answer them.
Venaco: a fair built around a working rural sector
The organiser's website advertised A Fiera di u Casgiu on 1–3 May 2026. Its published programme combined a pastoralism seminar, cheese-making and shearing demonstrations, a farm-cheese competition, direct sales and music. It also included a Sunday Mass and blessing of animals. These were advertised components of that past edition, not proof that every visitor participated in each activity. Organiser's 2026 programme
The programme puts production skills beside selling and celebration. A cheese-making demonstration and a discussion of pastoralism concern working knowledge, not just products on a stall. The advertised programme is evidence of that emphasis, not an eyewitness account of how the weekend unfolded. As of 26 October 2026, it is a past programme, not a preview of 2027.
“Edition,” “anniversary” and event date are not interchangeable
The Centre Corse tourist-office listing gives the same 1–3 May 2026 dates but calls the event its 28th edition. The organiser's page at fromages-corse.org calls it the 29th edition and labels the programme a thirtieth-anniversary celebration. Tourist-office listing Organiser's page
We preserve that discrepancy rather than inventing a history of cancellations or changing the event date to make the numbers agree. An anniversary can count years differently from held editions, but that general possibility does not establish the explanation for this event. If the edition number matters to your research, ask the organiser or consult dated past programmes.
Piana: an “actualités” page can contain several eras
Piana's municipal news page places a traditional-place-name inventory carried out with the University of Corsica between spring 2024 and autumn 2025 alongside older material, including a Christmas event explicitly dated December 2015 and a 2016 telecommunications item. The page heading does not make every item current. Piana municipal news index
This is not evidence that nothing else is happening in the village. It is evidence about what this particular index displays. Use each item as a dated record, then locate the channel carrying the information you need now. Do not infer present connectivity coverage from an old telecommunications notice or plan a visit around a decade-old festive announcement.
The place-name inventory also points towards another kind of cultural work: recording local knowledge rather than staging a festival. The index gives a lead, not the inventory's full findings. This article has not inspected those findings and does not invent examples of names or explanations.
The date belongs to the item, not just the page
A market rule, a fair programme and a place-name project each reveal a different kind of local activity. Preserve the actual date or recurrence rule with the issuing institution. The retained Venaco notice refers to May 2026, while Piana’s Christmas item explicitly dates its “today” to December 2015.
Corte's two squares show a recurring use of public space; Venaco's programme connects rural work with a festival; Piana's inventory concerns the recording of local names. Those specifics are more memorable than a generic claim that village life follows one traditional rhythm.
Municipal, organiser and tourist-office sources read on 26 October 2026. The fair is a past advertised programme; no attendance or future edition is claimed.
